1. What Chive Does
Chive is a personal knowledge hub. You save content — links, notes, and text — via SMS, email, our web app, iOS Share Extension, or Chrome Extension. Our AI helps you organize, search, and chat with your saved content.
2. Information We Collect
- Account information: Email address, name, and password (or Google OAuth credentials) when you sign up.
- Content you save: Text, URLs, notes, and any other content you send to Chive via SMS, email, in-app input, Share Extension, or Chrome Extension.
- Phone number: If you use the SMS feature, we collect the phone number you text from.
- Google Calendar data: If you connect Google Calendar, we access your calendar event data (event titles, descriptions, dates/times, and attendee counts) solely to power smart reminders and daily digests. See Section 5 for full details.
- Usage data: Basic analytics such as feature usage, session data, and error logs to improve the product.
- Payment information: Billing is handled by Stripe. We do not store credit card numbers — Stripe does.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To store, organize, and surface the content you save.
- To generate AI-powered responses when you chat with your saved content.
- To send you daily digests and smart reminders (if enabled).
- To process payments and manage your subscription.
- To improve Chive's features and fix bugs.
4. Third-Party Services
We work with trusted third-party service providers to operate Chive, including providers for database hosting, authentication, AI processing, messaging, email delivery, web scraping, payment processing, and infrastructure. These providers have their own privacy policies and receive only the data necessary to perform their specific function.
Your content may be processed by these service providers as required to deliver Chive's features.
5. Google API Services & User Data
Chive's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Data Accessed
When you connect Google Calendar, Chive requests read access to your Google Calendar data via the Google Calendar API. This includes: event titles, descriptions, start and end times, recurrence rules, and attendee counts. We request only the minimum scopes necessary to provide the features you enable.
Data Usage
Google Calendar data is used exclusively to:
- Generate personalized daily digests that surface relevant saved content alongside your upcoming schedule.
- Create smart reminders tied to calendar events (e.g., surfacing saved notes before a meeting).
We do not use Google user data to serve advertisements, to build user profiles for third parties, or to train AI models. Google Calendar data is never used for any purpose other than the features you explicitly enable within Chive.
Data Sharing
Google Calendar data is not sold or shared with third parties for their own purposes. It is shared only to the extent necessary to operate Chive:
- Our database provider — Stores your calendar events temporarily to power digest and reminder features.
- Our AI provider — Receives event summaries to generate your AI-written daily digest. Data is not retained beyond the API request.
These service providers receive only the minimum data needed and are bound by their own privacy policies and data processing agreements.
Data Storage & Protection
Google Calendar data is stored securely with row-level access controls so only your account can access your data. All data is encrypted in transit via TLS 1.2+. Google OAuth access tokens and refresh tokens are stored encrypted at rest. Access is restricted to authenticated application processes only.
Data Retention & Deletion
Cached Google Calendar event data is retained only as long as needed to deliver the feature (typically no longer than 7 days after an event passes). You can disconnect Google Calendar at any time from your Chive account settings, which immediately revokes Chive's access and deletes any stored calendar data. You can also revoke access directly from your Google Account permissions. All Google data is deleted within 30 days of account deletion.
6. AI Processing
Content you save and chat messages are sent to third-party AI providers for classification, embedding, and generating responses. We do not use your content to train AI models. AI provider data retention policies may apply — please review their terms for details.
7. Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored securely with row-level access controls so only your account can access your content. Connections are encrypted in transit (TLS). We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, but no system is 100% secure.
8. What You Should Not Save
Chive is designed for general personal knowledge — articles, notes, ideas, bookmarks, and everyday information. Do not use Chive to store classified, legally privileged, protected health information (PHI), or highly sensitive personal data. Chive is not HIPAA-compliant, does not hold security clearances, and is not designed for regulated data.
9. Data Retention & Deletion
Your content is retained as long as your account is active. You can delete individual items at any time. If you delete your account, we will remove your data within 30 days, except where required by law or for fraud prevention.
10. Your Rights
- Access and export your saved content at any time.
- Delete your account and all associated data.
- Opt out of digests and reminders in settings.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll notify you by email or in-app notice. Continued use of Chive after changes constitutes acceptance.
